National Maintenance Week 2014

MaintenanceEven though it’s a Friday, National Maintenance Week begins today until the 28th November. Having said this, the weekend is probably the perfect time to share some tips and tricks regarding DIY – as this is when most men, without trying to sound too stereotypical, are asked by their wives and girlfriends to get their tool kits out and fix the shelf that has been uneven for months, or put together a new flat pack wardrobe!

The week, organised by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, aims to raise awareness for both old and new buildings. Whether these are workplaces or homes, owners should re-assess the construction work and whether any replacements need to be made in order to keep their buildings safe and secure.

If you’re unsure about the status of a building you might be responsible for, take this 10 minute DIY test to help you check that everything is how it should be, and gain a couple of tips whilst you’re at it!

Do’s and Don’ts

Although you might think a bit of DIY will do the trick in terms of replacing a roof tile or fixing a leaking gutter, if jobs aren’t carried out to ensure these problems are fixed properly, they could end up costing you a lot of money in the long run.

Here are a few important Do’s and Don’ts regarding maintenance and repairs:

  • Do carry out regular inspections and maintenance work of your building
  • Don’t allow serious faults to remain untreated
  • Do ensure you are wearing the correct safety clothing, for example, wear protective gloves when clearing drains and gutters
  • Don’t carry out maintenance work at a high level unless you have the appropriate equipment, are fully knowledgeable and supervised. If you are not 100% sure, seek professional help
  • Do repair rather than restore or replace
  • Don’t waste re-usable materials
  • Do obtain necessary planning and legal consents
  • Don’t do any work without required consent

Remember if you’re unsure, consult a professional, reputable service with recommendations and positive reviews.
